Kamala Harris

Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician. Born on October 20, 1964, she is the 49th Vice President of the United States. She is the first woman to hold the vice presidency and the highest ranking female official in U.S history. She is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously the attorney general of California between 2011 and 2017. In addition she was a United States senator representing California between 2017 and 2021. Harris was born in Oakland, California. She graduated from Howard University as well as the University of California Hastings College of the Law. Harris began her career with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Then, she was appointed to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. In 2003, she became the San Francisco district attorney. She was elected Attorney general of California in 2010. In 2014, she won re-election. Harris was the junior United States Senate from California between 2017 and 2021. Harris defeated Loretta Sanchez to become the first African American woman senator and the first South Asian American ever to be elected to the United States Senate. As senator, she fought for reforms to healthcare as well as federal de-scheduling cannabis, a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants as well as the DREAM Act, a ban of assault weapons and progressive tax reform. National attention was gained for her outspoken questioning of Trump administration officials during Senate sessions. This included Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh who was accused of sexual misconduct.
